“I AM WBI’!
WELCOME TO “THE WBI BARBERHOOD”
I AM WBI is the voice of students, in their own words.
WBI is a diverse group of all ages, backgrounds and it’s really interesting to hear what they feel about their pasts, their education, and their dreams.
There are lots of personal and professional reasons why individuals are attracted to WBI, and just as many possible ways for students to apply the knowledge that our instructors passionately share.
The WBI Barbering School opened in early 2010 but quickly filled up with talented students at all levels of expertise.
The Panorama City WBI instructors. Ms. Lana and Mr. Rojas, experienced barbers with established careers, take unusual pride in their students.
It’s obvious from the work of their students that despite the humor and good-natured sarcasm in the classroom there is artistry being nurtured in the collegial atmosphere.
The barber schoolrooms are immaculate, comfortable, and very professional, with fresh leather chairs, shiny chrome and blindingly clean mirrors.
To lead by example, WBI provides the ideal setting to emulate after graduation.
Barbering tends to attract individuals with an aim and a focus on a career.
Many students get into the class and are surprised to discover it’s much more than ‘just clippers.’ Junior and Senior class instructor Ms.Lana sums it up: “We do everything that cosmetologists do, AND we shave.”
“In addition to cutting hair, men’s facials, facial hair technique, relaxers, color, urban hair design, and much more is taught.
Ms. Lana coined the term “The Barberhood” because she feels the emotional connection that men [and women] feel in the barbershop is something special.
Ms. Lana confides: “People share from their souls in the barber chair.” Mr. Rojas agrees. “Barbering is like therapy, for both the client and the barber, we listen, we give advice.” Ms. Lana adds ” People really open up in the chair. Sometimes I hear things that touch me so deeply, I have to excuse myself to go wipe my eyes.” She laughs. “That’s why I have these big sunglasses in my pocket.” For sure, the healing touch that a good barber extends is what many clients go for, consciously, or unconsciously. WBI teaches the unseen technique of the inner barber.
